Workshops

KASAPA workshops: dancing, drumming, singing, xylophone

You can feel the heartbeat of Africa as an expatriate dancing amateur or as a drumming beginner if you give yourself to the unity of music and movements. Just try it out! KASAPA workshop instructors are excellent musicians and dancers. They can adapt patiently and cheerfully to beginners as well as to advanced students. Small teaching groups of different levels will meet the requirements of all participants.

The workshop programme comprises of

  • 1 1/2 hrs dancing and 2 hrs drumming/percussion lessons daily, 5 days a week. (When booking, you may also request xylophone instead of drumming lessons.) Twice a week an extra 1 hr singing/rhythmic lesson. Additional private lessons can be arranged (for about 6 to 10 EUR per hour).
  • attendance of a professional drumming and dancing ensemble's performance (on your arrival or departure weekend, depending on your flight schedule)
  • a big party with friends and staff of the KASAPA project
  • a 2-day trip along the Ghanaian west coast to the scenic fishing town of Elmina with her ancient Portuguese slave trade castle. Overnight in a scenic hotel near Kakum National Rainforest Reserve or in a jungle camp with mosquito tents; next morning an exciting walk over suspension bridges between the tops of big rainforest trees and a informative hike (about 1 hr) through the forest with a ranger; on request a visit to Cape Coast Castle museum (during the second week)
  • During the third week we will do an excursion (two overnight stays) to Mesomagor, a remote village of cocoa farmers about 1 ½ hrs north of Cape Coast. Here you can get to know rural production modes, e.g. the processing of palm nuts, cassava and cocoa. You into can taste fresh palm-wine and make friendly contacts with the villagers. Mesomagor displays a spledid dance troupe, a bamboo drumming orchestra and the traditional evening entertainment of a lively, humorous story telling evening - village life at it's best! (Two days' lessons must be cancelled for this trip.)
  • During lesson days you can also do some shorter trips to the surrounding areas of the KASAPA Centre (e.g. to Accra), on your own or with a local guide.

Additionally as far as possible: an evening with a traditional story-teller; a concert with the legendary drummer Mustapha Tettey Addy, or the performance of a world-renowned xylophone player in KASAPA Centre; invitations to various social gatherings and festivities.

The package furthermore includes: Accomodation in twin-bedded or double or (with extra charge) single rooms in KASAPA Centre or in simple hotels or family houses during excursion trips; half board or occasionally full board during excursion trips; transport with a KASAPA owned bus or by public transport; transfer from/to Accra airport; competent personnel at your service.
